'Extraordinarily bad luck' isn't an acceptable answer, so I'd have to guess that our opponents believe they can cause more blowback damage by attacking a point just behind us and forcing us to fall forward. We're somewhat protected by our uniforms, so that may play a role as well.

Regarding the explosions, I believe it's a side effect of the magic our enemies use to create the monsters colliding with the charged energy of our powers.
