Some attacks can be spontaneously generated at a point without the need to travel from their originator. Others fly over our heads in an arc and land behind us.

Unfortunately, I haven't had time to examine the precise parameters. Everything involving magic is outside my realm of study as it only exists as an enemy tool in my world and I cannot perform it, but perhaps if I consulted with one of our ship's magic users I could form a more comprehensive answer.
