Interesting things about the character: -Howard's a resourceful little freak who turned an exercise machine into a set of restraints and cooked up his own booze out of improbable sources. He's also a drug dealer, in case the name wasn't a tip-off.
-Howard's the element of moral ambiguity in the series, along with a few other supporting characters. He's loyal to his one (1) friend, intelligent, a hard worker and can be very nurturing. He's also a self-centered little weasel who is unhelpful, rude and would sell you out for a candybar.
-Nearly left another kid to die so he could take a fully-clothed shower? Check. Also helped run a fire evacuation and broke down in tears the morning after because all the DEATH AND TRAUMA? Also check. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, DUDE.
-On that note, Howard's spent about 30% of his pagetime in the series either angsting or in tears. The other 70% he spends cowering and/or snarking!
-Howard can drive both a car and a motorboat, despite being thirteen or so at the beginning of the series.
-Howard has 'a peculiar genius for naming things'. Pretty much the only thing he HASN'T named in his canon has been the Supernatural Death Cough, and let's face it, he'd totally have thought of a cooler name.
-90% of Gone fans agree that he and his best friend, Orc, have eyebrow-raising amounts of Ho Yay. It does not help that the author keeps hinting Howard might be gay on Twitter. Unfortunately, the canon has yet to give any straight answers no pun intended. The next book comes out in 2012, so Howard's not allowed to have chemistry with anyone, ever, for any reason, rarara, until then. :|
Interesting things about the canon/fandom: -Gone has like a zillion characters. About sixty names come up in regular rotation.
-Gone is 4/6ths finished. The next two books come out in 2012. My plurk will be a spoiler minefield.
-The setting for Gone is a giant, inexplicable fishbowl full of teenagers and mutant horrors called 'the FAYZ'. The currency in the FAYZ is bullets. Also Monopoly stickers. And more bullets.
-The FAYZ features talking coyotes, flesh-eating worms, cannibalism, mob rule, mutant powers and a Big Bad. A Big Bad who is Space Jesus. With an army of beetles. You can't order better narm.
-Gone has the MOST BORING PROTAGONISTS EVER. Fortunately the supporting cast is awesome!
-It's empirical fact that Michael Grant drinks Plot-Holeade when he writes Gone. He then washes it down with a nice chug of Pseudoscience.
