Second Chance Meme!

Okay, rocks fell, everyone died. Too bad, valiant meatshippers! But the good news is that you've all be reincarnated!

...as baseline humans on modern Earth.

Maybe you're waiting at a coffee shop, and you spot someone out of the corner of your eye that looks strangely familiar. Maybe instead of strangers from universes far apart, you and your close CR are now childhood friends who have always been together. Maybe you meet a former enemy as a friend, or a former friend is now a bitter enemy.

Are you a college student? A high-powered lawyer? A kindhearted schoolteacher?

What would your life have been like had you been born under different circumstances, and you met your fellow crew once again? If you had a second chance? Would you still fall into the same habits, be a victim of the same misfortunes? or would you use the opportunity to be someone completely different?

1. Post with your character, or tag someone else.
2. Set up the scenario you want to explore!
3. ???
4. Meme!

[She's a freelance IT consultant, working in lieu of a college education after her wealthy family threw her out. She makes enough to buy the top computer gear, see the occasional movie, and pay for her medication.

Right now she's in a cybercafe near the college campus, back to the wall, blue eyes intently scanning her laptop screen.]

She glances up as the young man approaches, and deliberately keeps herself still in her seat. Her parents had always disapproved of her socializing with anyone who was not like them: rich, well-bred, and above all - white.

They would absolutely freak if they saw her sitting here among the 'riff raff.' Good.

She wasn't wearing her overly intimidating interview suit; instead she was just business casual today. She probably looked enough like an older student that she could blend in. So she gives him a smile, the slightly over-wide smile of someone who has had their braces removed and is enjoying the sensation of a metal-free mouth.

"No," she says, moving her laptop a little bit to one side and reflexively closing the screen - not that there was anything more interesting on it than some code. "I'm just visiting the campus, doing some work with the computer lab."

She shrugs faintly, then frowned for an instant. Something seemed familiar about the line of this young man's nose - no? No, she couldn't have met him.

It was just traveling. Three nights in one city, two weeks in another, living out of bags, knowing the layout of every hotel chain's rooms well enough to find everything in the dark. Not a life that gave you time to sit down and get acquainted with anyone. You saw so many faces, and never saw any of them again.

"Oh, there's nothing wrong in the labs. They're just upgrading some of the hardware, and hired me to help port over the software." A more natural smile. "If the campus email systems go down, try not to blame me too hard. That would probably be the fiber-optic network's fault, not mine...."

She considers opening up her laptop and checking the work schedule again, but decided against it. It would be rude. She thought.

He's a twenty year-old business major about to actually work instead of finish his college education. Who needs to pay that much in tuition anyway, when if he plays his cards right he could be making six digits next year between managing a state-wide chain and some shady deals on the side?

He wonders if his old thieving skills from high school are still as sharp as they were.

"Hey. Whatcha doin'?" he asks the blonde woman playing on her laptop.

She looked up and did not smile; that line was really too overused to earn one.

"I'm trying to decide how to make a fifteen-year-old computer program run on modern equipment, without having to rewrite it three times over," she said dryly. "A simple front-end emulation won't be robust enough for a student environment." Because the little hackers would be too tempted to mess around.

At the same time she quickly went over her setup in her mind. Her computer power cord was wrapped several times around the table leg, her phone was in her inside pocket, her primary wallet was in her other inside pocket, and her free cash was in her coat at her side. She'd been in too many cafes like this not to be wary.
