Slobo was a lot of things. Crude, disobedient, quick-tempered. But he also was fairly empathetic and pretty observant.

"Huh. Sounds like ya miss this Aang guy most of all." As he pointed out the obvious, his own mind drifted. "I got someone like that back home... Someone I, yanno, really miss. It can hurt." Another pause. "Especially when ya wish ya had said things before you were gone." His mood seemed to sink as he described the feeling.

Katara looked down. "Yeah, I do. You could say that every time I sleep, or every time I feel a strong draft, I look and expect to see him there, grinning in only the way he can. You could also say that there are a lot of things that we really didn't get to say to each other either: I got pulled here before we really could."

And then that blissful look changed to a more hardened look, as if all the optimism Katara had was only a passing thing. "And he's somewhere on this ship, being kept away."

Slobo looked up, noticing her shift. He got in front of her quickly, making sure they were making eye contact.

"Then we should go get 'im when we're done bein' trap-bait, if he's still caged." He pointed to his nose. "I can track people. By scent. Through SPACE. I should be able ta find a kid who smells like soggy firewood and windblown earth."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Katara almost laughed at that, if only because Slobo had that way of saying very inappropriate thing that made her laugh. In this case, she didn't feel too bad. And right now, she at least felt a little hopeful. It wouldn't just be her, Sokka and Zuko anymore bot some others.

"Thank you Slobo," Katara said. "He means more than even I could say, to be honest with you. I don't know if he's caged, I cam only remember he said he was protecting the people on this ship. From what, I don't know."

She turned to the boy. "So...who is she? The one back home you miss?"

[identity profile] top-teen-38.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Slobo's expression began to fall, and he quickly turned away.

"That's... complicated." Partially because his dream had made something very clear to him, he wasn't sure who it was he missed. At least he had it narrowed down to two, some couldn't say that. At first he thought of Anita, slowly realizing she was a great friend, a best friend, but as far as relationships go, that was all.

"Her name was Greta. She was like me, in a lot of ways." His tone showed what his back didn't. "People feared her darkness and usually ignored her light."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Katara felt a softness for Slobo now: she had no idea what it was like to have people naturally fear you because of what you were thought to cause. She could see by watching Slobo that people only saw what they wanted to see. Chris had done that, hadn't he, before even knowing anything about Slobo? It had bothered her a lot, honestly, which was why she'd reacted in such a hostile way toward Chris.

She hated when people assumed things about others without really knowing them.

"Why was that? Was she powerful like you too?"

[identity profile] top-teen-38.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
"More." Slobo gave a long sigh. "Way more. Girl was connected ta Death itself. As soon as everyone on the team figured it out, things started changin'. They tried ta act the same, even convinced themselves they were. But it didn't keep 'em from bein' skiddish around her. Or worse, outright ignorin' her when she needed help because she made 'em uncomfortable." His muscles tensed quickly as the thoughts and memories flooded back.

"Birdboy didn't exactly help any till the very end, even though she thought the world o' him." Full on bitterness, like an old Guinness."Idiot."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
Katara sat quietly, looking down. Things like this made her think of Toph, actually. Toph was easily one that could be pitied because of her being blind, but that was just another form of being skiddish too, wasn't it? Toph understood that though, and persevered by becoming one of the strongest earthbenders there were.

But this girl, how could she if she were feared by her own team?

"That was idiotic," Katara said. "Your team needs to stand behind you, they're your strength. If they abandon you, that can..."

Well. She didn't want to think about it.

[identity profile] top-teen-38.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, well, that's life." Slo said gruffly. "People disappoint ya, when they're not so wrapped up in their own problems that they even bother to pay attention." He remained with his back to her, a small drop of water hitting the sand near his foot.

"Ya don't get what ya want, and ya can't even say ya get repaid by knowin' the people ya cared about are really okay when it's all over. 'S just the universe I come from, Aqualass."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Well they should pay attention," Katara said, her face set. "At least here, I will. I don't care how different people say you are, or how different you might seem. In this ship, as long as you're a friend of mind, you have my loyalty. I thought it before with Chris, but I think I know it now."

Katara looked a little reflective. "I believe we can make our own set of rules, Slobo, and I don't think we should let people who let us down in the past dictate the future. Not for me, anyway."

[identity profile] top-teen-38.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 05:02 am (UTC)(link)
Slobo wasn't sure how to respond to that. Part of him wanted to outright deny it, but another part wasn't so sure. Katara did seem like a friend, and that made him think of the others he had recently met on ship. Static, Roxie, that ghost kid, Sheeana... And he did still have the better parts of his team around in Bart and Kon.

"I like that idea. This place is kinda a fresh start, ain't it?"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-10-29 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
"I think so," Katara said. "I know that its not exactly anyone's idea of a good time, but there are good people here, and we all have trying to get out of here in common. That, and I've learned a lot from the people here."

She was quiet a moment. "And anytime I feel close to breaking, I have someone new I can talk to. Everyone's experiences are different."
