There was a moment when Nate just looked like a deer in the headlights. Then he looked at Cassie's expression, and Jonas' back, he sighed, this was probably going to hurt, then his expression hardened slightly. Raising his voice, he called out over the water, his tone hard and challenging.

"Hey Jonas. You just gonna run away?"

Jonas paused.

"[Walk, actually,]" he called back, his voice edged with anger and a little bit of pain under a thin veneer of false cheer. "[I see no point in forcing myself into a relationship with someone who would rather be with you. Therefore, again, good day.]"

Dammit, why had his voice cracked on that last word? His voice was not produced by a larynx; that was entirely psychosomatic.

"Jonas..." As hard as she was trying to not cry, it wasn't working. "That's not..."

Actually, she had no idea if it was true or not.

This was stupid. Pathetic. This wasn't a situation he wanted to be in. But it was as much his fault as anyone else's. Standing up on the rock he called out, using the same, taunting tone of voice.

"You call yourself a hero, kid? You're just gonna walk away with your tail between your legs?" He forced a sneer. "If you'd give her up like that, you don't deserve her in the first place!"

Taking a step forward, he picked up one of the shellfish that clung to the rock and threw it as hard as he could at the intangible boy. "Turn around you damn coward! You care about her? Then !@$#ing fight!"

Jonas whirled and snatched the flying shellfish out of the air and sent it whizzing back to embed itself a good quarter-inch in the trunk of a tree behind Nate. A few inches lower, and it would have embedded itself in his head. Which frankly was not an untempting target. But there were Wiccan and Hulkling to think of, and the good of the time-stream in general.

"[Cassie is her own person and I deeply doubt that her affections can be swayed by a dick-waving contest,]" he sneered, stalking back toward them again. "[But do continue to attempt to infuriate me as if you do not realize that you have already succeeded.]"

Nate wasn't getting a break either because Cassie had turned her attention back to him. And she was mad.

In one movement Cassie shoved Nate off of the rock and into the water.

She was probably going to regret that later.

The shellfish whizzing past his head like that made him flinch instinctively and back down a little. He was just getting his nerve back when the attack came from behind and he found himself hurtling off the rock.

"WAUGH!" SPLASH.

He didn't come up for a long while. And when he did it was on the other side of the rock. Slowly, he pulled himself up, dripping wet and glaring at the both of them. "That all you two got?"

Cassie didn't wait for him to come back up. She was all ready swimming back to shore.

At least in the water she could hide her tears.

Jonas kept an eye on both of them to make sure neither drowned, but didn't bother approaching. As soon as both were out of the water, he planned to go in it himself -- it would be much harder for anyone to bother him beneath the waves, and it was not as if he needed to worry about breathing.

Nate sat down, facing his back to the both of them and pulling his knees up to his chest. "Go after her, you moron." He mumbled to his 'brother.'

Jonas shot him a glare.

"[It is already '@*^#ed up',]" he retorted, and dropped down beneath the water's surface to find some place among the weeds to sulk.
