The digital readout on the hover-cycles touch screen console continued to reflect the increase in speed. Eight-year-old Spock concentrated on maintaining control of the machine as the sand and rocks sped by in a blur. The wind was whipping his hair around, and the protective set of extra eyelids that he shared with all Vulcans were working overtime to keep the dust from damaging his sensitive eyes.

If he survived this outing, there was a 99.87% probability that his father would restrict his access to computer programs for at least one month.

"Commander, can I ask you to take a look at my assignment again?"

Spock glanced up from his data padd, noted the student's name and quickly pulled up his most recent assignment. Ah, yes.

"I see that you received a failing grade, due to shoddy sentence structure, uneven spelling, and a clear failure to grasp fundamental concepts of precision and rationality. You would do well to find a tutor to aid you, if you do not wish to fail this course."

The young man looked like he'd just been slapped. "Someone has a case of the Mondays."

Later, when he told his new aide what had happened, she laughed a little and tossed her long, glossy hair over her shoulder. "Yeah, someone had a case of the Mondays, all right. It wasn't you, though."

Human phraseology continued to elude Spock.

Sniffing counts, right?

Ahem.

"Something that is both extremely logical and utterly IL-logical. Riddle me that."

Spock was a rational being. He embarked on new experiences with the cool head and objective mindset that was always to be preferred in a scientist.

His relationship with Cadet Uhura was no different. As his aide for the Advanced Vulcan Phonology class, she had the responsibility of constructing study guides, holding office hours for the students, assisting him with the grading of assignments and sundry other tasks, all clearly outlined in the Academy guidelines. She performed all of these tasks admirably. She was one of the most highly-skilled aides Spock had worked with.

Beyond this, Spock enjoyed her company. She grasped the nuances of language with a deftness that was nothing short of unparalleled in Spock's experience. They also had many things in common, beginning, they soon found, with an interest in music.

The first time he heard her sing, at an Academy Chorale concert, he noted her first-rate pitch, and the pleasing tonal quality of her voice. What he was unprepared for, was the way she evoked memories of a sunset on Vulcan.

What he was unprepared for, was how comfortable he felt in her presence, and how, when she wasn't around, he often found himself wishing she was, no matter how illogical the thought might be.

Spock had never encountered such a paradox.

"I believe we have forgotten a vital element in this equation."

OR

Late night studies.

OR

Chocolate (how did that happen?!), dinner, hillside.

Logic is as logical as a jelly without a donut.
