Shinji shows up on the ship.

Asuka grumbled to herself, leaning against the wall of the observation deck. Another podpop, another bunch of useless idiots. It was always the same reactions - the disbelief, the anger, the multitude of questions. Morons. Yes, everything they had with gone. Everything was new and strange. But there were never any familiar faces. She'd been here for how long and not even one person had shown up (not even her mother, she thought with a twinge of shame and anger). At least then the universe would be fair to her. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair at all.

Her train of thought derailed a moment later as she caught sight of a familiar head of black hair through the crowd. She blinked and pushed off of the wall and started moving through the milling figures. Yes. that was definitely him. An awkward-looking, shy boy standing by himself and staring forlornly at the people around him - but never quite making eye contact. He was alone in a sea of people. That was so Shinji.

She grinned to herself as she very nearly tackled him from behind, "Shinji, you idiot! Why did it take you so long to get here?"

Shinji let out a yelp and stumbled, arms flailing for a moment as he tried to keep his balance. His eyes bugged out as he stared at Asuka and he stammered a reply. "Au-Ausaka? What... what are you doing here? Where...?"

Asuka released him, grinning widely. She didn't really want to admit it, but finally having him around (even if it was Shinji) made her feel happy. It was good to see a familiar face. She slugged him in the shoulder playfully and he winced, rubbing his arm ruefully. "Welcome to Stacy! Come on! I'm going to have to explain everything to you - and probably extra-slowly so you actually understand it."

Asuka grabbed him by the arm and started dragging the poor boy through the crowd. Things were finally looking up.
