Second Chance Meme!

Okay, rocks fell, everyone died. Too bad, valiant meatshippers! But the good news is that you've all be reincarnated!

...as baseline humans on modern Earth.

Maybe you're waiting at a coffee shop, and you spot someone out of the corner of your eye that looks strangely familiar. Maybe instead of strangers from universes far apart, you and your close CR are now childhood friends who have always been together. Maybe you meet a former enemy as a friend, or a former friend is now a bitter enemy.

Are you a college student? A high-powered lawyer? A kindhearted schoolteacher?

What would your life have been like had you been born under different circumstances, and you met your fellow crew once again? If you had a second chance? That takes him by surprise; he ends up blushing a little. Is this a date? This is all moving pretty fast, and it's not like he hasn't run into girls before who showed up interested in skipping several bases with him. But if she wanted that, then she would've picked a different venue. Right?

"Um, that sounds good, I guess. I didn't see the first one, though. Should we go to the one at 7:10?" He's not too interested in Green Lantern, anyway. Really? Van Wilder as a superhero?

You sure? We can see something else if you want. [Allie's still all smiles, now.] But if you don't mind, 7:10 is great. And you don't need to have seen the first one, I'm pretty sure. But I liked the first one. Took my little brother to see it when my dad was too tired to.

He smiles back. "No, it should be fun. I think, anyway." He goes up to the counter, fully intended to buy both of their tickets for them. Even if it's not a date, it's only polite.

"I didn't know you had a little brother."

I do. He'll be a freshman next year, but he's not sure if he's going here or someplace else on a football scholarship. His name's Zack. He wants to be a geologist. [Allie hops a bit in place, hands tucked behind her back.]

Does this mean I get to pay for dinner? Or popcorn or something during the movie?

[She might be thinking more "date", but that doesn't mean that she's going to let the potentially poor art major empty his pocketbook!]

"Huh?" He blinks. "Oh, that's okay. I can get it. I mean, I'm the one who called you, anyway."

A football player? Hmm. She must mean American football. Sometimes it was a little hard to tell, since some countries called soccer 'football', too.

[And that has her laughing, yes.]

Zouichi. I asked you to call me, that's not fair! And art supplies aren't cheap! Come on, please? I'm not one of those kinds of girls!

[By which she means the ones who try to use their male interests as a personal cash cow.]

Well. It wasn't everyday that a girl asked him out and wanted to pay for things. As much as he'd rather pick up the tab himself, it's hard to say no to Allie.

So he nods. "Okay. Then I'll pick up the tickets and popcorn, and you can get dinner?"

That sounds fair! More than fair. [He gets a decisive nod, and a grin, and she tucks her arm in his.]

So, show me where this Thai restaurant is? Do you go there often?

Allie is so forward; he has to keep from squirming a little in surprise.

"Yeah, um. Whenever I'm in the area." He starts walking with her, arm in arm. "So if your brother's coming here, too, does that mean you live nearby?"

No. We live in Texas, but I'm here, so Daddy thinks it's an option, since I don't seem to want to go home. Much to his annoyance. He wants me to do preliminary pageants for Miss Texas. And I don't care about that. If I break into acting, I want it to be because I'm a good actress, not because I've got a pretty face, y'know?

[As bubbly as she's been, this is something that actually makes her sigh.]

Maybe it's just 'cause he misses Momma, but we all do.

"Yeah, I guess I can understand that." Allie talks about the pageants matter-of-factly, almost as if they were part of everyday life. Maybe in Texas, they were. Or maybe Allie was merely as unusual as she seemed.

"What kind of actress are you trying to be? Movies? TV? Theater?"

[She shrugged at that.] I think I'd really like Broadway, but I guess that depends on whom I impress. I'm trying to get a well-rounded education, but I know only a fraction of aspiring actors make it. Which is why I'm actually being serious about my minor, so if it doesn't happen, I can come back and work on a degree in botany later.

He smiles a little. "I think you'd make a good actress. You have a lot of... presence? I think that's what they call it. Anyway, I didn't know you were in botany, too. Do you do a lot of field trips?"

Thanks! [Well, it sure seemed like a compliment. Zouichi was a taciturn sort of guy, but maybe he was shy? Probably. Still, she couldn't help blushing a little.]

Not too many yet. Well. Some local ones, but nothing out of state or out of country yet. We've got a pretty nice greenhouse going on campus, too.

It was, indeed, a compliment. They arrive at the restaurant and sit down; turns out it's a little tucked away from the rest of the street, but well-lit and welcoming inside.

Zouichi opens his menu. "So do you do this a lot?"

Do what a lot? Go out to eat? [She's looking at her menu, but with a furrowed brow. You just don't get a lot of Thai places in Texas, but she's got an idea of what the chili peppers mean, at least.]

Or did you mean give guys my number and hope they'll call me? Because the answer to both questions is "no, I don't." Usually I'm kind of busy, actually. But you seem nice, and I think you're cute. Never know what might happen if you don't take a chance, right?

He's taken aback. "Um... what?" No one's ever quite this up-front with him, even if they do want something from him.

"I guess. No one's ever put it that way before, though." In fact, it sounds like something someone from the movies would say, or like a mom or something. He buries his face in the menu to hide the slight flush on his face.

"So, uh, what are you getting?"

[Erk. She doesn't know!!] Uh, I was hopin' you could give me a suggestion, because they do not have anything like this where I'm from. I like spicy though.

Maaaaybe the green curry with beef? It sounds good.

[And then, Allie shrugs a little.] I guess maybe it sounds weird, but I try to be a pretty straight shooter, you know what I mean? Though it's been kinda funny in the past, when people expect me to act one way and I don't, you know?

He smiles. "I like that. Although I like the shrimp curry more."

And then raises an eyebrow. "Um... what do you mean, 'expected you to act one way'?"

Any reason? Or do you just like shrimp better than beef?

[Here, Allie sighs.] Like, because I'm blonde and pretty, I'm expected to be a bitch or somethin' to everyone, or think I'm better? I mean, I might've had a phase like that when I started high school, but once shit got real at home, I grew up. Life's too short to go around treatin' people like trash. We're all on the same planet. We all have to get along, you know?

[Aaaand cue blushing.] Uh, sorry. That's a button for me, I guess. I didn't mean to start preaching on you, Zouichi.

"Oh, I just like seafood. And I guess it tastes a little different, too. Different ingredients, anyway."

He blinks. This line of conversation is making him a little uncomfortable; he has no idea what it's like to be 'blonde and pretty'; he's an Asian kid, and no matter how well-spoken he is, or knowledgeable about pop culture, or whether or not he has an accent, people will always pick him out of a crowd as someone foreign, different.

Someone who doesn't belong, and never will.

"Um. I guess that makes sense?"

Sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel uncomfortable. [As by now, that is even obvious to her, despite being a little self-absorbed sometimes.]

So do you like the school? Obviously you like your classes, and clearly you're good at them.

He smiles. "Yeah, the people in the art department are really nice. Some of the professors are a little spacy, though. Like Professor Green, who does sculpture? I think she's mostly into modern art. But I'm not really into using blowtorches on things. I mean, it's cool if some people want to do it, but I like drawing and painting more."

I'd actually like to see some more of your artwork some time. Not to mention if you think we could sneak behind the gym of a morning to see your fox kits.

[He discovered them, so they're his.]

And I could maybe show you around the greenhouse if you were interested in that at all?

"Huh? Oh, um... okay, I guess. If you want to. They're really cute."

He smiles a little. "Sure, I'd like that."
