How about your entire race being enslaved to demons and tricked and forced into doing horrendous things that generations would be paying for years after they've been "freed"? Or having loved ones torn to pieces by the undead and then see them raised as the very thing that ripped them apart so they could do the same? Or how about knowing that no matter how hard you fight, your world is doomed in the end and there's no changing that fate? Hmmm of course I wouldn't know ANYTHING about how dark a dreary a world can be. Nope, not a clue.
