Luis promoted her up in the Science Department because she is one of the few physicist-specialists aboard the ship and he values her expertise. Regardless of crew belief, the fact she's a sexy older woman has nothing to do with it.

The fact she is a sexy older woman DOES make Luis very willing to nail her, if that's the kind of thing she might be into sometime.
