Ickle Meatships!

Hopefully no one sues me for semi-stealing the SLEEP meme format but!

ICKLE!

Think about or think back on the childhood days/younger days of your character (or your character now if they already are kids). There's a huge playroom with a mountain of toys....

Have fun, Kids! And no fightings!

Bitterly Feuding Foes?

He may be eight years old, but Luis knows a kid trying to one-up him when he hears it and he just rolls his eyes at the comment.

"Do they not have books or birthdays where you come from?"

Could it mean anything but?

Brainy hasn't had enough experience to pick up on what's probably either a rhetorical question or sarcasm, so he answers in all honesty. "No. Neither is really familiar to me. Books became outdated centuries ago and I'm not really familiar with the term 'birthday'. I can imagine the context, but I don't see why it's relevant."

Oh. Well. Clearly this kid was underprivileged or something. Luis remembered this conversation with Abuelo-- they lived in a very small town, while some children lived in big cities and some children lived in even smaller towns, and he must always think of where people come from while he talked to them.

He took a deep breath and turned up from his book, explaining very patiently. "You get presents on your birthday," he said. "Abuelo always gets me books, and he goes all the way to the city to get them."

He feels like he's missing something vital here. "But you've already been born, wouldn't you have gotten them already?"

Yeah, no kidding. "Wouldn't you have gotten what now?"

"Your gifts," he says like it's something obvious. "If you receive them on the day of your birth and you've already been born, why are you looking forward to them in the future?"

Clearly birthdays don't happen on Colu.

Jeez, this kid did need help. "No no, you get presents every year on your birthday. You are not born all over again every year, obviously, so you get presents on the same day. Like my birthday is the sixteenth of September."

[identity profile] emotionl4arobot.livejournal.com 2010-02-15 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
That made more sense, but there was still something fundamental to the entire concept that Brainiac 5 felt like he was missing. "Why do you get presents at all? Celebrating a birth I can understand somewhat, but then celebrating every year that passes seems a little pointless."

"Why not?" Luis asked. "You get older so you might as well celebrate, sí? Last year I got presents because I was turning eight, and next year I will get presents for turning nine.

[identity profile] emotionl4arobot.livejournal.com 2010-02-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Getting older is hardly much of an accomplishment," Brainy points out, speaking slowly as though the child was stupid. "Wouldn't celebrations be better reserved for something more important?"

Luis could not help it if this kid was too dumb to see the appeal in getting presents and new books once a year and was getting a little tired of having to explain it. "Okay, so what do you think is worth getting presents over?"

[identity profile] emotionl4arobot.livejournal.com 2010-02-15 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Brainy pauses, thinking for a moment. In all honesty, he couldn't think of much because celebrating in general seemed strange to him. "Maybe something like making a new scientific advancement?" he eventually suggests.
