::It takes a bit to find said hand and when it is found? The oddity's nose kind of bumps into it, as if the critter hadn't seen it. Well, doesn't see it or anything else. Even so.
Sniff. Sniff. Lick.

And then a seriously pathetic attempt at English::

Ew? Is?

It occurs to Brainy that one, the creature clearly can't see him, and two, it actually is trying to speak. Unfortunately he doesn't recognise it or anything it might be related to at all, so the chances of him knowing a language that might be more familiar are extremely low.

He takes a risk in gently patting its head, hoping that isn't going to offend it.

"Can you understand me even if you can't speak very well?"

::The headpet gets a kind of ear-twitch, then a purring nuzzle-sniff. And then a nod. Understanding's the easy part. Mostly. Speaking? Not so much::

Eeee.

Taking that as a good sign, Brainy continues petting a little more confidently.

"Alright, so you're clearly somewhat intelligent then," he says, partially to himself. "Do you have a name you can tell me?"

Eeee. Tehll? Tehll.

::Chirrup. Then an ear-twitch and a nod. Oh, don't mind the collar on his neck. No tags::

Rrrrrehnne!

Brainy's starting to get an idea of how the little creature speaks now. The collar is also interesting, and it's a pity he doesn't think asking about its purpose will get him much.

"Rehne?" he tries. "Is that accurate?"

Eeee. Rrrrrehnne.

::Chitterchirp. Sniffnudge::

He's decides to take that as a yes then.

"I'm not sure if my name will be too difficult for you or not. It's Brainiac 5."

As he speaks, his hand continues petting gently, enjoying the texture of Renne's fur.

::Well, technically the Renne is hairless except for the tangled mop on his head. And his one eyebrow. But his skin, where it's not rough by scars, has a kind of peachfuzz sort of texture. By now? He's purring a bit, still sniffing at this Brainiacperson.

...nickname incoming::

Eee. Bay.

"Bay?" He supposes he can live with that, since Renne can't manage 'Brainiac 5'.

"I wonder where you come from..."

Eeee. Bay!

::Chirp! Okay, this life-form isn't displaying anything that means harm. So the oddity lets his guard down -- but not by much. Close, the beastie edges, sniffing like crazy. Even perhaps licking a bit.

And then he hears that question. Out comes a soft, low trill. Then he backs up a little and starts...basically sweating quite profusely, enough that he reeks of something resembling mint. Add that to his steadily climbing body temperature (it would not be wise to touch him!), the silvery sweat vapourises into a steam around him.
It's this the Renne uses, plus the emotional power of his own memories to offer Brainy a kind of holographic image.

It's a city. It stands atop earth that looks like glaringly-white, powdery sand; a coastline that dips into a massive blue-black ocean with waters as thick as molasses. The city's crystalline buildings and spires just up into a blood-red sky and pierce golden clouds.
The buildings themselves? In short, they might be considered an engineer's nightmare, how they spiral and twist in ways that seem inconceivable.
And in this realm? Pure emotion manifests as living beings.::

Eeee.

Brainy stops patting the moment it becomes clear Renne's upset or something by what he said, and a question is on the tip of his tongue before the holographic display begins.

He stares in obvious fascination at the display, and when it's over his gaze drops back to Renne, a new, intense curiosity in them.

"That's your world? And you're... manifested emotion?"

Eeee. Urrrr.

::A low-voiced chirp. Allowing the odd holographic thing to remain for a moment longer, the beastie sniff-crawls back toward Brainy. By then, his temperature's once again controlled (think hot-water bottle).
His tone of voice, the mellow streaks of slate-blue on his skin and the word he's trying to say conveys a rather simple message.

This was his native world. Emphasis on the "was"::

"Oh," Brainy says. There isn't exactly much more he can say to that really. While he has his own fair share of problems with Colu and other, supposedly normal, Coluans, he can't imagine what it would be like to lose his world entirely.

"I imagine it gets lonely," he ventures.

Eeee. Ess.

::A trill, then a nod. Both ears perk-flopping forward, the beastie leans in and offers a kind of nuzzle. And there's a wee bit of a smile on his face. Just...Yeah. English::

Eeerrr. Ow. Fffffen.

He doesn't need to think that hard to pick up Renne's meaning. It's hard to think what else it would be.

He tries a smile in return. "Well, you can make friends with others, can't you? I'd be your friend. ...if you wanted that is. I don't really have any myself, so I'm not sure how you go about making them."

Eeee. Ffffen.

::Nod. Chirrup. That's what he was trying to say! Two chirps and a multi-harmonic trill (don't ask him to say "Ah") later, the oddity offers a nuzzle.
And...

Quite promptly tries to crawl onto this life-form's lap. If he's sitting down::

Oh, 'fen' must be an attempt at 'friend' then. Brainy's smile strengthens, only to turn into surprise when suddenly he has a lap full of... whatever Renne's species is.

He stares down at the creature for a moment, confused about what to do now, then hesitantly tries to pet his head again. It worked well enough the first time.

::Yep. A full maybe-four-and-something pounds lapful of warm-skinned, purring critter. Lifting his head, the oddity flicks an ear, then extends a webbed hand/paw...in a careful attempt to reciprocate the petting.

His aim is probably very, very off though::

Brainy doesn't tend to laugh very much, but he smiles again as Renne's hand pets his cheek. He's largely made of some kind of metal, but his body is programmed to maintain something close to human body temperature, and whatever he's made of isn't obviously metal unless touched.

He leans a little closer so Renne can reach a little better. "Is that easier?"

Oooooooh....

::That's not human skin. By now, those big ears are perked forward and the big eyes are a little wide in wonder. He's quite literally reeking fascination.::

Soff'. Oooooh!

"Hmm?" Brainy's still having a little difficulty figuring out Renne's speech, so he's not sure exactly what he was trying to say, but he can understand what's gotten his attention.

"Oh, I'm not organic. I'm largely cybernetics, armour, nanotechnology..." Without meaning to he's become more serious.

Eeee? Is soff'.

::Purr. He's still petting, yes. Although by now, there's a definite forward-lean and a curious snuffling. The words? They end up tragically butchered::

Gan? Sai-nuh?

He was pretty sure that was a comment about his face being soft, which was a little strange. Not a word he would have associated with himself. Soft was reserved more for things like real skin or hair.

He wasn't sure how accurate his interpretation was, but he was almost 65% certain that the next couple of words were 'organic' and 'cybernetic'.

"If you're asking what I think... Coluans aren't organic. We're not flesh and blood like other species are. I'm made up of components and programs..." He hesitated before reluctantly adding; "Like a living computer."

Eeee? Poo-turrr?

::Blink. Yep. Colour him confused. Very literally; specifically a kind of blue-greeny with a touch of curious.
With such curiosity mounting, the oddity at least tries, like a little monkey, to crawl up onto a shoulder::
