SHAMELESSLY STEALING IDEAS FROM HEDGE
Fleischheim. It's a bustling medieval metropolis, possibly a port or trade city of some kind, surrounded by massive walls. In the center is a fortress, the home of the ruling authority of the land. It's an old-tech place, one where people who claim to have magic are believed, for they may or may not be telling the truth, alchemists yearn to transmute lead into gold, and guards in chain mail and knights in plate keep the peace.
Your characters are now in this place, as visitors or citizens. If they're not human, they are now. If they're superhuman, then they're merely the stuff of legends here, be it through skills or amazing physical prowess.

The girl quickly did her best to move the rubble off of him, showing surprising strength for her size. "If this continues it might be better for the town if we work somewhere more isolated. Giving the carpenter's business is one thing, next time you might give the gravedigger more work."

He stands, brushing dust and pieces of building from his robes.
"You are correct, of course. More care is needed in the future, and so more care shall be given. However!"
He beams cheerfully, as his disorientation from the force of the explosion wanes.
"We are close, Yue. So very close. I know it because of my learnings."
And he falls over again. Apparently that disorientation hadn't faded as much as he thought -

"We are getting closer though..." not sure what it is we're getting closer to, except making the carpenters rich. At none of my books were in the blast this time. She flipped through one of her journals, "Next time I'm sent off to exchange tomes with fellow scholars I'll see what their alchemists have been working on elsewhere."

When he's less loopy, he will be glad of the same. Allen loves Yue's books, usually so much more relevant than the ones his dear wife brings back from her travels, bless her heart.
