She tilts her head back, clearly tired, not only physically but of how many times this particular situation has come up before.

"We've had this conversation before, John."

If that's what it took to get him to stop calling her that...

He stiffens and looks back up again, having already gone back to work.

"...Sorry," he says finally.

"I'm nearly finished." He gestures to the omnicomm, to pull the focus off the subject of names and titles.

She knew it would get him. She knows him too well.

She steps behind him to look, without asking. There was no point to.

The Chief turns his omnicomm wordlessly so that Samus can see what he has. It's a writeup of their most recent assignment. It's mostly a pretty frank description of events, but he notes that a couple of her decisions were "reckless".

Samus points at that specific instance, quirking an eyebrow.

Chief responds with one in kind, though more lightly. Well, it's the truth says his expression.

She shifts on her feet and puts one hand on her hip. Doesn't mean you needed to put it in writing, Chief.

"Do you want to pull up a chair?"

Is that a challenge? Maybe.

Wordlessly, she pulls up one of the flat office chairs near the side of the room. It wasn't nearly as comfy as the one in her office, but it'll do. She props her head up on her hand to read.

She notices how dusty this chair happens to be. "When was the last time you actually used this office?"

"Never," he answers.

"Do you have a problem with my report, Samus?"

He has to put emphasis on the name in order to say it. That was almost a ma'am.

She hears that. But she's glad he made an attempt. She's training him well.

"I just don't quite remember this part the same as you have it written here, Chief," similar emphasis on his "name" of choice.

"And what do you remember?"

Really Samus. Enlighten him. That was a risky move back there and he knows it.

"Here, let me." Samus is leaning over the omnicomm (and perhaps snaking her arms under Chief's and encroaching on his space a little bit) to make her contribution to the report. She frames her actions as less rash and more dangerous but necessary to complete the job.

He reads her addition. The proximity doesn't seem to bother him, that or he just doesn't really notice. He's working. Everything else is background noise.

"You and I both know there was another way," he says, tapping on a quick "despite the availability of additional options".

She sits up slightly, leaning back on her hand. She flicks her eyes over at Chief, too tired to be completely professional right now.

"My way was quicker."

There may or may not have been a smirk.

"Almost getting killed wasn't worth the time," he replies. He doesn't find this as funny as she does.

"We'd need a new head of security."

And like hell if he's doing that job again, says his tone.

She straightens up, looking serious again.

"You want my job?" She only asks to make a point, "And you know as well as I do that even we couldn't have finished it as quickly any other way. If we stuck around, we might not have gotten out of there at all. Every once in awhile, the risk is worth it."

"Both were risks. That one was bigger," he says, not really giving any ground on it.

"But for the record, no. You can keep that job."

She makes a small wave of her hand. Agreeing to disagree on that.

"Thought so." She's a little distant, though. She may be a little reckless on her own, but Chief suggesting that she made a poor Chief of Security or didn't care about the crew hurt a little. And then she wonders briefly why she cares what he thinks...

"Any further objections, ma'am?"

There is a just, just slightly perceptible flinch around the corner of his mouth after he lets that one slip.

Oh well, no taking it back. Maybe if he just doesn't call attention to it...

"Just that you stop talking like my old CO."

Pause, "Who, for the record I also called by his first name."

So HAH.

"It's too familiar for me. You don't know me that well."
