Her sudden vehemence startled him into silence, and he lay back meekly, feeling both peevish and abashed. Eventually he sighed, quietly. "'m sorry," he managed. "I just. Don't get sick very often, I guess. Didn't back home, anyway. Not used to being laid up like this."

"Well, I used to have to care for the boys and my brother in my village: trust me, I've definitely taken care of my fair share of sick people. Not all of them deal with it gracefully either. But the fact is, the longer you postpone getting better, the worst you get. I understand you want to get to work soon, no one gets that more than I do. But you need to give your body time to recover. Will you please do that?"

"Yeah..." He sniffed again, immediately feeling irritated with himself for how pathetic he sounded, an irritation that he made no effort to hide. "Just feels so stupid to get knocked out by something like this."

"Nobody likes it, trust me," Katara said. "It's even worse when you have tons f work to do and training to catch up on. Something like this actually happened to a couple I know on the ship too: one was taking on a lot of work for the greater good, the other knew that doing that too much would be too taxing. In the end, you have to do what's right for your body, so that you're able to help people another day."

"Mn, I guess." Jamie could see the sense in that, but it still grated to be stuck here. "'f we set down someplace and the Ohm start attacking, though, I'm not gonna just lie here."

He sighed. "Besides, I feel like I'm gonna go nuts lying around not doing anything."

"If the Ohm starts attacking, I can't guarantee what sort of condition you'd be in, but I wouldn't blame you for joining in on the fight. It is all of our duty to help as much as we can."

She nodded. "No, I understand not wanting to just stay around. If you like, I could get you a book, or something you can do in the meantime."
