I - uh - wh - I - no! No, I mean, not like that, I mean, I, I don't like anybody! Oh God. Oh no.

[He makes a waving motion.] Personal bubble, okay?

Kaya giggled. "Got it, personal bubble, you don't like anyone."

She would have felt bad, but in all actuality, it was really funny to her, his reaction.

"You aren't like a lot of boys your age. I can;t tell if that's a good or bad thing yet."

"It's a totally fine thing, okay?" He shrinks back a bit, reverting to the scared kid who's afraid of getting his ass kicked for something minor. "You just do that, go up and kiss random people?"

"Yeah, that's what I do, because I'm gross like that!" Kaya shot back, looking annoyed. "If I had known this would be the reaction, trust me, I wouldn't have bothered. I just thought I would get more than "ugh, get away from me."

It's a meme, she has to do it!

"No, I mean, you're not gross, that's not what this is about. Jeez." He shrugs helplessly. "Personal bubble. That's all this is about."

Kaya sighed. "You know, eventually you're going to want a girlfriend of your own. She might have a little problem with your 'personal bubble' rule."

"Maybe I won't. I haven't really thought that far ahead." Besides, there are certain people - very, very few people - who are allowed in the bubble. Presumably if he ends up in a relationship that person will get added to that tiny list. "Why, do you just not mind people getting all up in your space?"

"Well maybe you're too young for that kind of thing. And as for your question, that would depend on the kind of invasion of personal space we'd be talking about. If they were hovering over me, I'd politely ask them to stop. If they kissed me, I would ask why before I decided whether they needed a cold shower or not."

He's not, but he doesn't say that out loud. Really it's just a further extension of his trust issues - why go out intending to get close to someone when odds are they'll hurt you down the line? Better to keep that ring of people you care about as small as possible.

"So you'd be totally fine if some random person came up and kissed you."

"Maybe not, but I'd probably start with asking them why they did it to begin with. To be honest, I'm not out to hurt you or do anything to you...I hardly know why I did it, but I'm not feeling bad about it. I'm sorry it made you feel so uncomfortable."

He gives her a level stare for a moment. "Okay. Understood. Sorry I wigged out on you."

She sighed. "Howard, you really need to loosen up. You don't have to be so guarded all the time. Sometimes a kiss is just that, you know?"

"No, not really." He's guarded for a reason! A totally good and not at all hyperbolic reason! "I'm fine how I am."

She sighed. "Well, if I can hope it, I'd like to make it so you're not scowling so much. I've seen war and I learned to make my peace with the world in my own way. I hope one day you can do that too. There are people here who would do that for you, you just have to look."

"It's not a scowl," he says defensively. And hey, half the time it's a mocking smirk! "And no offense, but your world sounds a lot nicer than mine, war and all."

"It's not a smile, what would you call it?' Kaya asked. "And what makes it nicer? The lack of mutants and evil kids? It's not any less bad, just bad in a different way!"

"The absence of a smile isn't a scowl. And no, I'd say the lack of flesh-eating worms and presence of anybody who knows what they're doing probably helps. Your world may be awful, I wouldn't know so I won't argue, but there is nothing even remotely okay about the FAYZ. Unless kids torturing each other to death over half a carrot sounds okay."

Kaya sighed. "Look, I'm not trying to compare and contrast our worlds. Yours sounds pretty horrible, and goodness knows there's no reason to torture somebody over a stupid carrot. What I'm saying is that this isn't the FAYZ: there are people better than that, who want the chance to help each other. Is that so bad?"

"Yeah, right now, it's not. But we didn't exactly get warning when our world went to hell. So for all I know I'll wake up tomorrow and it'll be the same thing all over again, and this creepy spaceship isn't exactly reassuring." He chews on a thread he's pulled from his shirt. "And for what it's worth, I don't need help. Help out other people who do need it."

"Well no one ever gets a warning for things like that," Kaya said. "As for waking up to more craziness, I pretty much count on it just to get myself prepared. It helps to have people here who are going through the same thing."

Kaya gave him a look. "Oh right, because you;re a perfectly well adjusted, normal person with not a hint of paranoia at all, hmm?"

"For you, maybe. Like I said, what works for you doesn't have to work for me."

He returns that look. "'Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you', ever heard that?"

Kaya could have been mad, but the truth was, she sort of liked how Howard was anti-trusting on the ship: it made her want to see things how he did, and she thought him to be one of the most interesting people she met.

She snickered. "If they're out to get me, I'll worry about it when it happens: when it comes down to it Howard I'm a fighter to the end."

"Good for you. I'm a fan of 'run and hide'."

He's still not sure what to think of Kaya. Her insistence that he lighten up irritates him, but other than that he finds he'd rather have someone disagree with him than just agree blindly (that's too close to Orc, and he doesn't want to think about how he misses Orc). And Kaya is one of the people who disagrees with him most.

"I'm aware," Kaya said, shaking her head. "But the biggest problem with that is every time you run and hide, you give the enemy more incentive to take more. Sooner or later, you don't really have too many places to hide."

"And if you don't you might end up dead. I've already risked that a few times. I don't want to anymore. Rather you not end up dead either."
