Oh the weather outside is frightful...

The situation: It is dreadfully cold. Think 'ice cave where all those slash fics are set'.
The goal: Keep each other warm tonight!

☀ STEP THREE: Both participants are aware that they should/must keep nice and warm. To do that, you need to bundle up nice and closely, however grudgingly. No, killing your threadmate and cuddling the body doesn't count.
☀ STEP FOUR: Keep 'em warm! Hot cocoa, hot coffee, hot tea, hot mustard, or other suitably warming beverages will be provided if you cooperate.

((Basically just a winter-themed cuddle meme, with evil ideas from Shae and Col. Add some cuddle urges in the air if your characters won't otherwise cooperate but you want them to.))

"Hyaa ha ha ha ha! And they'd fail!" Of course they'd be trying to take him down! Pram might watch in amusement rather than participating, but everyone else -- how could they resist what they'd surely think was a helpless target!

"That's the rule of the Netherworlds! The strong survive and the weak fall! And no one's stronger than Zetta!"

Emotional growth -- AVERTED!

She would have put her face in her hands if she could right now. Ah well...it was just as well. Thinking about what he said and being thoughtful about his place didn't fit Overlord Zetta anyway. He was too...wily?

"How's Ruffnut doing?"

"Awesome. Those new lightning powers are kickass." And she's got a friend, Zetta didn't mention, because he wasn't entirely certain if that was a good thing. Still, there's unquestioned pride in his voice as he continues. "She is the best apprentice I've ever had."

"Lightning?!" That did throw Katara for a loop. Not that she minded that Ruffnut could do that, but was that something that she just was able to do, or was it something she acquired on the ship? "Did you teach her that? Huh."

She grinned. "Oh, I saw that enthusiasm in her when we first met. She's pretty amazing!"

"Matt did. After that whole anger virus thing, he described that sort of thing and it sounded like something she could handle." Zetta knew, after all, that Ruffnut didn't have too much torque in the gears in her head. Not that he cared, or that it mattered for his purposes; after all, brains were clearly not a requirement for "strongest Overlord in the cosmos".

"There aren't many humans that'd make a good demon, but she's one."

"Matt? You mean my..." She corrected herself, reddening slightly, "I mean, Matt Olsen? I should have known. He would go and teach something like that. I mean, he did definitely display some magic powers on the W.I.T.C.H. bus. They're a little different from Negi's, but they still are pretty effective. So Ruffnut is using that kind of magic! Good for her...you know, as long as she doesn't try to shoot lightning at random people or anything."

Here, Katara face palmed a little. "Somehow I think I agree with you."

"Yeah, your boyfriend." Zetta had no idea of anything that had gone on outside of his sphere of awareness -- since, frankly, he's only vaguely aware that things exist outside of his sphere of awareness, and he assumes that if they were important he'd know about them. So he's going on what he'd seen of Katara when she'd been treating the injured Matt.

Funny how he's such an idiot and yet right.

"NAw, Ruffnut keeps it under control. She's a lot smarter than anyone gives her credit for." Zetta clearly meant 'smart' as in... well, whatever he considered HIMSELF to be, too, which abided by no normal definitions.

"He...he's not..." Ok, that was an outright lie, and that was why she couldn't say it. After all, they'd kissed, they'd known each other for more than a year, and they were starting to see each other more and more. Only an dolt would have not considered them boyfriend and girlfriend. The sputtering coming from her was probably more telling than she meant it to be.

"Well anyway," she said, trying to change the subject, "I never thought that she was going to go around shooting people with thunder or anything, otherwise Matt wouldn't have taught her that to begin with. To be truthful, I'd kinda hoped I'd get her to join the Outsiders, but if this is her calling, why not, right? I'm glad she's doing so well, being an apprentice demon."

The Overlord enjoyed a cheap laugh at Katara's expense, which is probably the most evil thing he'd done since coming on board.

"No reason anyone can't do both. I'm teaching Hit Girl now... though she's a student, not an apprentice. Too much heroism! Overlords can't be heroes, it doesn't work right."

Katar glared, bopping the book. "Thanks a lot! See if I do you any more favors!"

She would, but she was still miffed.

"I guess not. Hit Girl huh? Honestly though, I've seen a lot of heroes in this place, but none like her. A hero that young is rare enough, but I've never seen one like that so out for blood. Well, you saw her with the dragon. I have a feeling if a guy goes up against her, they never do again."

Which was a little scary, honestly. She never tried to kill if she could help it.

"Yeah, that's the problem with her. Too intent on removing problems. She doesn't get that victory is proving you're stronger, not that you're able to kill."

An odd distinction for a demon Overlord to make?

Katara wrinkled her nose. "So if you're a demon, you should let your enemies continue running around? What if that enemy comes back? Not that I'm arguing for killing enemies, but she doesn't have any powers like you do, and she is just a little girl. What if they came back to kill her?"

Oh, it was plenty odd to her, all right.

"The fun of the battle is in beating them, not in killing them. If you're strong enough to beat them, you're strong enough to kill them, and both of you know it. What's the point in doing it, then?"

It's an easier decision on the level of the Overlords like him. Battles were power and strength, not complicated by other emotions.

"I mean, take Alex. God of Destruction. Seems to think he's my rival. He's sent 20,846 assassins and declared war 6,413 times trying to take me down. It's totally futile, but his efforts are entertaining. If I'd killed him, I'd have been a lot more bored over the years."

Katara was quiet. "Yes, but that also gives those people the chance to come after you again. Revenge is a powerful thing, and if she kills like she does, it might be because the people in her world don't fight fair."

She knew a little bit about what someone like, say, Azula might do to get to her opponent. They got inside your head.

She chuckled. "It's a lot easier to say something like that if you're a demon. Being a human, especially one with no powers, must be hard."

"Hmph. Fair? What the hell is 'fair'? There's only being so weak you couldn't defend yourself, or being so weak you couldn't beat someone without cheating like crazy." Of course, the line was purely intuitive. Summoning a host of minions into battle: perfectly acceptable. Attacking Zetta while he was a book: perfectly acceptable. Attacking someone after they'd been weakened in a serious fight: pretty low.

"But being a hero means killing sometimes. Stopping someone from ever doing again what you were trying to stop them from doing. You're right: it IS easier being a demon. Born strong. Born evil. Ha! When we get out of this you should come by my Netherworld and see what it's like!"

'Well that's what I mean," Katara said. "The kind of people that are in her world might try to get to her in another way. Humans can be...very crafty, and attack at the things that matter most to you. Not that I'm saying that's what happened to her, I don't knkow what her life is like. But if we were to ask, who knows what she might say?"

She nodded. "I know. It's an ugly truth I've been trying to avoid, but I couldn't when we were on Zozek II. They were going to kill, so we had to be ready to stop them. They're relentless beings, the Ohm."

She made a face. "I don't know if that would be a good idea."

"Yes. The Ohm? None of that stuff I just said applies to them. I wouldn't have said I hated anyone, in all the time I lived... until now." The Overlord's voice was a low growl, as truly threatening as he'd ever been since he appeared on this ship. He meant what he said. He will see them destroyed.

"Why not? You could handle it there."

Katara saw that anger in his voice, and to be honest, she couldn't see herself feeling any less angry. She had just helped free her world from war that had ravaged it for years: to have the Ohm undo all of that and potentially take her away from all of the people she cared about?

"I'm glad we agree on that," she said, her face hardening a little. "You really think I'd last there?"

"Yeah, you'd be fine. You're pretty badass for a human girl. Besides, I wouldn't let anyone screw with a guest of mine."

A compliment and a hint of a decent streak. Zetta was slipping!

Katara grinned. "Glad to know that I could last that long. Who knows, maybe I'll get to see it someday. There's a lot I'd like to see."

She looked over at the book and poured some more hot chocolate into his mouth. 'Enjoying yourself?"

"I guess? I mean, it's an ice cave in the middle of nowhere...Why do I keep ending up in weird circumstances with you anyway?"

Katara giggled. "I don't know! It's not like we're that similar or anything. I don't really mind your company, to be honest. You have a really funny way of thinking, Overlord Zetta."

She took a sip of the hot chocolate herself. "Do you really enjoy my company, Overlord Zetta? I thought I'd be nothing but a random human to you or something. I don;t really know how demons think, to be honest."

"Funny? It's only funny because you're not the most badass freakin' Overlord in the cosmos! Besides, don't tell me I'm the only one. With all the weirdos and lunatics on this ship, I'm the strangest one?"

W-what the?! What's with the honest questions? Zetta looked baffled for a minute. "I'm an Overlord! The strongest one in the cosmos! NO ONE is good company -- you're all weak, and, and, not -- not as good as I am! I don't need anyone around to be happy!"

Of course, if he'd stopped there, maybe it might be a jerk enough of a declaration to be believable. But no, after a moment Zetta decided he had to be yet more absolutely clear on the idea.

"Overlord at my level... we don't have friends. I told you that. Everyone at that level got there by being damn strong, and the kind who you can't turn your back on! I mean, sure, I got along well with Pram, but I knew she'd turn on me if I let her! Even though she did warn me about the Sacred Tome, but... b-but that's because she's from my Netherworld to begin with! She didn't want to see her old home destroyed! Everyone on the ship is nothing but annoying! Annoying people who aren't worth my time!"

Another pause.

"Minions. You make good minions. Not even great minions, you all are hung up on heroism and way not evil enough. I'd tell you to burn down an orphanage and you'd just look at me like I was joking! You'd probably even think I was! You're terrible minions!"

And he paused again. Not for very long.

"Except Ruffnut. Ruffnut's a good apprentice. Unlike SOME disciples of mine I could name!"

Then he realized he'd said entirely too much, and stared in horror at nothing before glaring at Katara. "That don't exist! I was speaking -- hypothetically!" Change the subject, Zetta! Change it! What had they been TALKING about anyway?! "Uh, so -- company? You all are... interesting. You're... challenges. I can't avoid you all, so I might as well get to know you, so when the time comes and we're facing down the Ohm I know who I've got on my side."

Katara should have been surprised at what the Overlord was saying but she wasn't: if anything, this was exactly the sort of thing that she'd expected him to say.

"I'm never going to be anyone's minion," Katara said. "Or anyone's slave, or anyone's conquest. That was why I worked so hard in my world to become stronger. You don't get heroes just because we decide to be that: you get heroes because there will always be people who want to take things for their own, no matter who gets hurt. That's why we go around saving orphanages, or fight things like the Ohm. If people want to call me a hero, they can, but it has nothing to do with why I do what I can to help others."

She smiled. "And if you're fighting against the Ohm, then you know I'll be on the same side you're on."

"Ha! You'd have to be stronger than anybody. You know that pretty much leaves only the option of Overlord, right?"

Zetta grinned wildly at that mental image. "Ice Queen Katara, the Hero Overlord! Hyaaa ha ha ha ha ha I'd pay money to see that!"
