"I'll show you pathetic!" She put on an extra burst of speed and reached out to grab him. Just a bit farther...

And he's just a hand's length away by now. Come on Cassie you can grab him. Come on, just a liiiiiittle more.

Grabbing? How about tackling to the ground. "Gotcha!"

"Waugh!" He just manages to turn as they collide, stopping himself from going to ground facefirst. But the problem with that, is that Cassie is now on top of him.

A pause. "...Uhm...hey."

On top of him and practically naked.

Cassie really should have thought her brilliant plan through.

"Uh... hi." She should get up, you know, any time now. Really.

Why weren't her muscles moving?

Yeah. They both should probably have thought it through.

He should probably help her up, right? So... why wasn't he getting up? Oh yeah, she was on top of him.

"Uh...you wanna, uhm... get in the water?"

"Water. Yeah." Move girl, move.

And finally her muscles responded and she rolled off of Nate and onto her feet. She held out a hand for him to take if he wanted help up.

"Yeah.."

He took her hand to help himself up, dusting himself off a little. Sand. Ugh, it got everywhere. He looked out at the water. Hey, was that a rock way out there? "How good are you at swimming?"

Better than I am at tackling.

"Pretty good. Don't tell me I have to swim after you this time." Although at least that wouldn't end in groping.

Possibly.

He laughs, completely forgetting the awkwardness of five seconds ago. "Think you could even keep up? I'm aiming for that boulder island thing over there."

And to be fair, he wasn't groping much earlier.

"Don't worry, I'll go easy on you." She didn't wait for a response before diving into the water. Turnabout was fair play.

"Wha- Hey!" He dove cleanly into the water and stroked quickly to try and catch up, that was so unfair.

Cassie tried not to laugh because that would only get seawater in her lungs. She did slow down enough for Nate to catch up, well mostly catch up, she couldn't just give away all of her advantage but he had a good chance now.

He pushed harder trying to catch up. He was abreast with her legs now. Just a bit further and they'd be on level. Go Iron Lad!

Cassie slowed down just a little, not enough to be too noticeable or to look deliberate.

And damn the girl was a fast swimmer. He drew up next to her however, and the boulder/island came up fast. Just a little more and he'd win. Was he always this competitive?

Cassie kept pace with him but she wasn't nearly as driven to win as Nate seemed to be. She actually kind of wanted him to win.

But her muscles really were tired, so Cassie didn't feel as bad about not going full steam ahead like she usually did. She started to fall back.

Well he'd always been good at these things back home. Not that anyone knew. He wasn't generally very well liked after all. It was like his little secret that kept him going through his sad little life.

They were already near though, and the next moment, his hands touched the rock and he stopped, treading water next to the spot and grinning. "I win!"

And a few moments later Cassie touched the rock. "I was close!"

Nate really did have a pretty smile.

"Close ain't good enough." He laughed, pushing his wet hair back. She'd put up a good fight though.

And she was pretty in general. But well, he didn't have the words to say so. "Man, the water feels good."

"See, I told you. This beats reading." Actually being with him beat reading but she didn't have to get that specific.

"Well, not by much. But it does have it's own...allure." Yeah, he just used a big-ish word. So what?

"You wanna get up on the thing?" And by thing, he meant the rock, of course.

Cassie just went bright red for a second. "The what?" Yes, her mind went there.

"Uh...the rock?" He hadn't meant anything by it, honest. The thought hadn't even entered his head until she went red, and then it hit him. And he went red too.

"O-oh! No! I didn't mean that!" Watch him flail, Cassie. Watch him flail. "The rock! I totally meant the rock!"

"OH! Oh the rock. Of course, the rock. Uhm." God, way to go, moron. "Yeah, yeah sure. Uhm. Yeah." Not waiting for any further awkwardness Cassie the boulder and climbed up because.
