[Sigh.] Okay, here come the mushy, unmanly feelings, since I have to be honest, and there are a lot of 'em.

Sometimes I'm the little brother, when I don't understand something about people and the world, when I need some normalcy, when I need to feel like I've got a family and someone looking out for me. Sometimes you're the little brother, when you suck at girls or actually having fun, and I'm like the older bro that encourages his uptight little brother to go out, break some rules, get totally wasted, and live a little.

Sometimes, with Bart, we're the mom and the dad. (P.S. I'm so not the mom).

"Best friend" works, though. I think that term is a little undervalued sometimes. I don't need to call you my brother. "Best friend" can mean the same damn thing and maybe even more.

You're too uptight, you're too hard on yourself, you need to learn to unclench and as the years go by, I worry about you getting more and more unbalanced with your life. For me, Superboy and Kon-El and Conner are the same person, but that same person can fix a tractor and eat Ma's apple pie and make her and Pa laugh at little at the table, can run around Gotham with a paper bag batcowl on his head, can crossdress to save the the Daily Planet from the Creeper, and can do serious stuff like save the world.

With you, though, sometimes, I'm worried that you're losing Tim Drake to the cowl, without realizing how important he is, how he's just as good as Red Robin is, just as good as Robin ever was. Because it was Tim that saved the world--and our friend--when Secret went nuts and we couldn't think of other ways to help her. It was Tim that became my friend, because back when that happened, Robin was an uptight pain-in-the-ass freakboy that didn't know the meaning of the word "fun" sometimes.

Both parts of you are important, both parts of you are good, the freakboy that has all the angles covers and the dorkmonster who listens to Enya and pretends it was a birthday present even when I saw his fingerprints on the CD with my awesome super-vision. How you manage to split them off into parts sometimes freaks the hell out of me, because if you can't be both at the same time, if they are split, it means someday you might throw one part away, and not be the whole person that I like, that's my friend.

I know I help you not do that, and so do Bart and Cassie and 'Wing, and all the people you care about. That scares me sometimes, too, that you might get lost if I ever die for good, that me dying could hurt you so much.

I can live with being scared about that, though. As long as I'm alive, there are people I'm gonna fight for. There's innocent people, yeah, there's the world. There's myself, because I want a chance to live my life and have a chance to have more than just a few years living. But there's also Cass, and Bart, and Ma, and Kal, and everyone else I care about--and there's you. When I fight, when I'm struggling to keep going, to make it, you're one of the people I don't want to hurt by being gone. You're one of the people I fight for, so I can be around when you need me.

And I'll never let you give up on yourself--on all the parts of yourself--on the parts that are hardass and freaky and fight for the innocents, or the parts that are dorky and know how to have fun sometimes, as long as I'm still around. I know you get scared sometimes, about what you're going to become someday, about who you're going to grow up to be, just like I do, and I promised you once that I'd never let you become something you didn't want to be.

I don't think you'll ever need me to keep up on that promise, because I think you're decent enough and strong enough to do that for yourself, but as long I'm still kicking, as long as I'm still sucking in air, I will always, always be there when you need me.

So that's how I feel about you.

I ain't using the L-word though, and no meme on Earth can make me.

Cargn is kind of odd! On the one hand, Nanoha does look up to him and his experience, and she's found him nothing but cordial and pleasant to get along with; he's someone she knows she can go to for advice about a ton of things (well, those things relating to their mission, anyway). On the other hand, she always gets a very grim feeling from him, even when he's being perfectly nice. She gets the feeling his world is a tough one...
