As you may know, applications open once again on June 1st. That's in...precisely two weeks! New crew members abound! They don't actually get to play until July, but it's never too early to start thinking about characters you may want to apply for. If you already have your idea, great!

If not, well, sit back and allow us to provide some suggestions.

Most specially James Raynor, who is the best male sci fi character ever. I don't know any way to go on about how awesome it is because it's one of those facts of the universe. Water is wet. The Pope is Catholic. James Raynor is awesome. And we should totally have one on the meatship.

Now, I'm not asking this just cause I play Sarah Kerrigan. I'm asking because James Raynor is awesome.

And really, anyone from Starcraft is awesome too. They have to be because they're in the vicinity of James Raynor. So any of those are also wanted.

CAN YOU HANDLE THE POWER?

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers sure as hell can! And they'll rock harder than anyone while doing it. Just listen to their song of ass-kicking!

As you know, our current cast consists of the Blue Ranger, Billy, and his archnemesis Lord Zedd. But what kind of Ranger rainbow has only one color? Not the ship's Ranger team, that's for sure. They have five, as it should be. Jamie, Lash, Ron, Andy, and Kate are a unit of awesome, as Billy was with his original friends from Angel Grove. The ones he still misses very much.

Please allow me to introduce you to Billy's missing friends and hopefully convince someone to give one a second look. Boring, personality-less goody two-shoes? Yeah right. That's not all they are! Maybe they aren't entirely full of the 'attitude' Zordon promises in the show opening, but they definitely have spunk. Allow me to count the ways in which they utterly rock as people.

Jason and Trini

First up is the ever-present Red Ranger, Jason Lee Scott! Just look at this fellow, isn't he handsome? He's the group leader, ever level-headed and ever-encouraging. Also, ever-unable to use an indoor voice while morphed. With him, you get major caretaker syndrome and guilt complexes. Ever notice Billy behaving that way? Guess where he got it from!

...yeah. Other interesting facts about Jason: he's one hell of an expert at the art of barbecue, he loves shirtless katas, and he's the king of rad bromances.

Second is Trini Kwan, the oft-underestimated Yellow Ranger! She espouses a distinctly Zen philosophy, can keep up with the guys at martial arts, and is well known for her calming abilities. Another known talent: the translation of complex phrases and concepts into laymans' terms. Just ask everyone who had the misfortune to know Billy before he learned to put down the thesaurus. You might think she's boring, but she really just knows how to roll her eyes at stuff that makes no sense. Like her boys, most of the time. And as one of Angel Grove's smartest girls, she makes a fantastic lab-worker.

Other interesting facts about Trini: She collects unique dolls, she loves to hug, and tai chi classes are her thing. Give her one on the ship and she'll be happy as pie.

If anyone enjoys interacting with/watching Daimon and Cassie enough to want to app a character close to them I can send you more information and scans issues of their canon. Daimon's run is pretty short and I would love a Saphira/Saripha (for some reason they changed the spelling in the last issue she appeared in, editing fail). She's an albino witch who used to be Daimon's romantic interest but was also his friend.

Cassie would love her daddy. Scott Lang is a great character. He's a single father who became a super hero so he could save the only doctor who could perform a life saving surgery on Cassie. He's also an ex con- was sent to jail for five years for burglary. And he's got a stomach of steel to deal with all the terrible dishes his daughter cooks.

Roy Mustang: He likes miniskirts? Early on in-game Russel figured out how to transmute the plantsuits into miniskirts. BFF?

As you know, I play Sasami. I've played her for over a year here and over three years total. But, all the times I've played her, I've never had a canonmate for her.

Until now. I hope.

Anywho, I want YOU (any of YOU) to pick up a character from Sasami's canon, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (commonly referred to as the Tenchi Muyo! OVAs). 20 episodes of slapstick harem-based comedy!

Now, just who are the characters from this awesome series? Well, I'll tell you!

Tenchi Masaki - The hero of the story (despite the fact that the title suggests there's no need for him!) Once a normal 17-year-old boy, his life was flipped upside down one summer when he accidentally freed a mysterious space pirate from her prison. Two years later, he's now revealed as a freakin' power house and is living with six beautiful women (Sasami being one of them).

Ryoko Hakubi - The aforementioned space pirate. The daughter (and creation) of scientist Washu Hakubi, she was taken control of by the criminal Kagato and attacked Jurai (leading to Sasami's near-death experience and assimilation) before being imprisoned by Tenchi's grandfather. 700 years of time out later, she's free to do as she pleases - most of which is try to get into Tenchi's pants.

Ayeka Masaki Jurai - Sasami's official older sister. Once engaged to her half-brother Yosho, she traveled the cosmos looking for him, only to find out that he was an old man and he was aiming for her to marry Tenchi instead! Prim and proper most of the time, she really has a short temper and will explode if pushed.

Mihoshi Kuramitsu - A member of the Galaxy Police whose encounter with Tenchi and company was completely by accident. A little on the ditzy side, she's quite cheerful and somewhat competent (unlike her other counterparts)

Washu Hakubi - Ryoko's "mom" and one of the three major goddesses (or "Choushin") in the series. An incredible genius who has devised many creations over the years, she does have some secrets hidden within that altered 20,000 year old body of hers!

Noike Kamiki Jurai - The new girl of the bunch. A former member of the Galaxy Police (and Mihoshi's partner), she ended up being chosen as the girl to be Tenchi's official wife (though there's a very good reason it was set up that way). Though helpful and with a bit of a temper, she does have one secret that connects her to one of the gang's old foes.

Those are just the remaining mains of the series. There are plenty more where they come from, especially if you dive into its spinoff series Tenchi Muyo! GXP!

You totally want to explore the post-traumatic psychology of living in a Lord-of-the-Flies-like fishbowl full of mutant animals and radiation! Or maybe you just want to play a teen superhero. YOU CAN DO IT.

DRACONIANS OH MY

Dragonlance is about the world of Krynn, one of the campaign worlds for Dungeons and Dragons, and it's chock full of elves and dwarves and kender and dragons and magic and gods.

Don't worry, you don't have to have any knowledge of the game itself to play.

ANYWAYS. While I would love any character from it, the ones I most need want are fellow draconians, specifically Fonrar and the kidlets. I'll go ahead and give some info on a bunch of them, though.

- Fonrar, Kang's mate, is one that does not put up with shit. When the males wouldn't teach her and the other females how to even use a sword, she decided FUCK THAT we'll learn on our own. She's smart, and tough, and just plain awesome.

KANG MISSES HER LOTS AND REALLY WANTS HER AROUND. ;___;

- Slith is a nosy, sneaky bastard, and he's totally Kang's BFF. He was the 2IC of the regiment, but when Kang retired, he was promoted to Commander, and pretty quickly became the General of the entire Teyrian army.



Just look at him. Badass. And he has two mates (TWINS), every man's dream.

- Gloth is not the brightest of draconians, but he's not a complete idiot, and is a competent officer and engineer. He's deathly afraid of snakes.

- Hanra and Shanra are affectionately known as the sivak twins, the only two adult females so far, and they constantly bicker with each other over the smallest thing. It's just how they work, though. They give Slith lots of headaches.

- Granak is a HUUUUGE sivak (easily over nine feet tall), and he is the Minister of Information. He's pretty neutral about most things, and very loyal to Kang. He's also a badass fighter, like all draconians, and he once survived a javelin to the back, between the wings in combat, yelling about getting that damn toothpick removed.

Kidlets

After asking the other mods, they said it was okay for other people to app Kang's kids as older than a month. So, any age between 10 and 18 (they reach maturity at roughly the same rate as humans) would be lovely.

I'll leave a description of Kali up to TC, but here are the other three. I can give you all of the canon info there is on draconians, as well, and I'll let you fill in the rest of the details. She's done wonderfully, and I have no doubt several of you could do the same.

- Brevo is the type that thinks bravery is the absence of fear and will sometimes go out looking for trouble to prove himself. He's also /very/ protective of friends and family, and even though he fights all the time with Yana, he does care about his sister. He's the biggest and strongest of the bunch

- Yana is a little troublemaker, very headstrong, and complains about Brevo constantly, but she cares about him too. She looks and acts a lot like her mom.

- Grosk is a bit serious, and very, very blunt at times. He's very literal-minded. Like... he's the type that will ask those very personal questions that everyone else is thinking but knows better than to actually ask, and not get why people don't want to answer.



Come on. Look at them. That is one awesome mother and group of kidlets. You know you want to app one of them.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, YOU SHOULD APP FROM GARGOYLES AND HERE'S WHY.

Exhibit A: It has an awesome theme song. Video quality's a little poor, but that's what you get for being a cartoon from the 90's.

If the theme song isn't enough to explain why this show is awesome and you should check it out even if you're not thinking of apping, let me give you a rundown: It's the year 994, and humans are sharing earth with these nocturnal creatures called gargoyles. Gargoyles are badass warriors by night, but easily smashable during the day when they sleep as stone. Because Humans Are Bastards, and because Goliath's ex is also, the clan of Castle Wyvern is murdered, leaving only six survivors - clan leader Goliath, his mentor, three younger brothers, and their family pet - who are then put under a spell that causes them to sleep "Until the castle rises above the clouds."

A thousand years later, billionaire, villain, and ponytail enthusiast David Xanatos meets the conditions of that spell by having Castle Wyvern dismantled and flown by helicopter across the Atlantic, to be his new home atop the Eyrie building in Manhattan.

The clan awakens, take names for themselves from their new city (except Goliath, who already has one), and are instantly embroiled in a plot by Xanatos to use them to his own evil ends - foiled by the friendship Goliath quickly makes with NYPD Detective Elisa Maza, who makes a point of being a much better guide for the gargoyles in this new city than the guy with the goatee who wants to use them to get around the law on his behalf.

It's a pretty great show with a strong central cast, epic mythic elements, strong Shakespearean influences, and villains who win, even when they lose. If nothing else, you should at least give it a look, as all the episodes are on youtube, right here.

GARGOYLES - CHARACTERS

The Clan -

I'm starting with Elisa because I would be lying if I said I didn't want her most.



Elisa Maza is one of the very few humans to reach out to and befriend a clan of gargoyles. She's a detective of the NYPD, and is a badass normal in a world where you can have wings and claws and still be normal. This is a woman who, when cornered by a werewolf without her gun, doesn't scream for her monster buddies to come save her - she grabs whatever happens to be nearest and hits the werewolf in the face.

At the same time, she's also a warm, compassionate, humorous person. She's a detective because she cares about people, and believes in upholding justice to make the city a safer place for upstanding, moral citizens to live.

Elisa and Goliath have pretty much been in love with each other since night two. They spend most of the series dancing around their UST, being best friends who love and support each other even when they disagree and generally having THE LONGEST Disney courtship, while still also having this strangely mature and functional relationship-that's-not-a-relationship, since, you know, interspecies. It's kind of a complication.

If Elisa was on the ship, she and Goliath would be the most awesome badass normal battle couple, and also he would be about a 110% less sad. Also, the Meatship would be about 10% more awesome by my count, since Elisa is easily one of the greatest female characters in western animation, and I would totally play her myself, if I wasn't already playing her not-boyfriend.



THE TRIO

They're very confused as to why nobody's apped them yet, when they're so great.

Left to right, Broadway, Brooklyn, and Lexington. These guys are the younger members of Wyvern Clan. They each range across being serious young warriors and gargoyle youths with their own foibles and areas of interest.

Broadway, the big guy, is the group sweetheart. He likes westerns and detective noir films, and is the most interested in Elisa's job as a detective, going so far as to follow her around on duty once every now and then. He's also got a hate-on for guns, and is surprisingly scary when he's angry, in a beware-the-nice-ones kind of way.

Brooklyn is the fan-favorite, a bit of an adrenaline junkie, and probably the one of the trio who has the most problems with Manhattan, where humans are even more scared of gargoyles than they were in Scotland. He just wants to fit in and chill out, bros. =\ Brooklyn is the second-in-command after Goliath, and has skills as a military tactician. Also, sarcasm.

Lexington is word-of-Gay and the Smart Guy of the trio. He's a genius-level engineer, and picks up mechanics and computer science really quickly. He's somehow learned to type with four fingers. Also, surprisingly good with kids. But probably not as good as he is at building motorcycles after riding them once.



HUDSON.

He's old, and he's a badass. Kinda more into staying back and guarding the castle/clocktower/whatever we're guarding these days while the younger clan goes out on patrol, but still. He's an old badass. Every game needs more of these.

Wanted: One Abe Sapien. He's an amphibious fishy-looking dude who's a good marksman, damn good at fighting in water, and has psychic-ey kinda powers. Abe is also hella good at supernatural knowledge and lore. He has lived probably his whole life in a government facility call the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Like his best buds, Abe has spent most of his time there fighting thing that go bump in the night.

Personality Snapshot: Well-read, inquisitive, calm and easy-going, with a dry wit. He was voiced in the one movie by David Hyde Pierce, if that gives you any idea of the type of character.

He'd be arriving in the company of his two best buddies, Hellboy and Liz Sherman, who will need his support so much that they might even forgive him for nearly selling out the whole world. Oh right, nearly forgot that part: Abe almost sold out humanity for a girl. He's a good guy who made a bad choice.

Canon review: TWO MOVIES. And some wiki-ing for background since Abe's origins weren't revealed in the movies yet. That's it.

Why you should app Abe: In his own words: "If there's trouble, all us freaks have is each other." You'd have a chance to play a character that's regarded in his society as a freak in a place where he and his friends wouldn't be. Abe, Hellboy, and Liz have something of a chance at a normal life, which says a lot about how bizarre their lives are that like on Stacy can be normal in comparison.

Before I say anything, yes. That is a magical girl with a machine gun. IF THAT'S NOT ENOUGH TO GET SOMEONE TO APP HER, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS.

Anyway, this here is Homura Akemi, and I really can't get into her much without a buttload of spoilers, so I'll just say she's a ~DARK AND MYSTERIOUS~ girl who is crazy-awesome and has powers to match. No but seriously. Allenby would love, love, love any other Gundam Fighters to be around. Whether it's Domon Kasshu, George de Sand, Michelo Chariot--okay so she'd get into a fight with him in five seconds; IT WOULD STILL BE FUN--you should totally app one of 'em. HERE IS A BRIEF RUNDOWN OF THE MAINS.

Domon Kasshu: The main character. He's got burning spirit like nobody's business, communicates his soul through his fists!!! and well... he fails pretty hard at social. Social that does not involve being a martial artist. Can be horribly childish; real kids are like, magnetically attracted to him.

Rain Mikamura: who manages to be at Domon's side through the whole series and remain a rational human being by the end. THIS DESERVES A MEDAL. She is nice, does not put up with crap, is a super-combination of doctor and mechanic, and she borrows the Rising Gundam when nobody's using it, should another Gundam be needed on the scene. AND SHE KICKS ASS.

The Shuffle Alliance:

-- Chibodee Crockett of Neo-America: boxing champ, fun personified, wants to show the universe THE AMERICAN DREAM! Also hates clowns.
-- George de Sand of Neo-France: Made of chivalry and refinement, pilots Gundam Rose and uses roses in his specialty technique, and don't ever cancel a match on him, seriously....
-- Sai Saici of Neo-China: Obnoxious kid, amazing cook, can fail pretty hard, damn smart on the battlefield and if you think you can beat him, think again.
-- Argo Gulskii of Neo-Russia: Like seven feet high and almost as broad, former pirate, pretty stoic, not too refined but really looks out for his friends.

AND ANY OTHER GUNDAM FIGHTER YOU'D WANT TO APP IS FINE BY ME TOO.

It has science and religion and sexy lady robots (seriously, KOS-MOS unf), geeky scientists, loveable loser sidekicks, hilarious ship crews, clones, clone emo, lolis, loli emo, bridgebunny lolis! Cyborgs, synthetic humans and fights about their rights, samurai, MECHA (of both the small and Gundam and also omgwtf huge size), epic space battles with gorgeous backgrounds and badass spaceships, magical girl transformations, crazy insane scientists, psychos antagonists that are so screwed in the head it's borderline creepy but has so much background and reasoning for it, it has Jesus-type characters, more shipping options than you can imagine (got a type? Xenosaga has pretty much all of them). GOT A CHARACTER TYPE? I can totally try to pimp one that suits you. |D

But Tara I don't have a PS2/don't play video games/whatever NO EXCUSES LOOK I HAVE AN ENTIRE CANON COMPILATION HERE TO WATCH ONLINE! (http://carrieswar.livejournal.com/2171.html) And the game is very story-heavy so while in the end I really do suggest giving the game a go (because they are really fun, especially III and its mecha battles), going to that link is a great great GREAT alternative for those who cannot. \o/ Xenosaga is a great series with an awesome (if not sometimes confusing because woah sciece and religion) story and absolutely amazing and deep characters. I don't even care who APPS from it, I just love spreading the love of the series because it's one I hold near and dear to my heart.

This is Gaignun Kukai and the character I want more than anything! he is Jr.'s ... "father" (except not exactly) and shares an emo cloney bioweapony past with him. But Gaignun's inner demons go a little beyond that when the past quite literally comes creeping up behind him in the most unusual (and OH NO) way.

He owns a WHOLE SPACE COLONY that many other clones/sub-humans/outcasts live in harmony harmony oh love. Because they understannnnnnd the paaaain. Gaignun is smart and sophisticated but can be funny and laid back as well.

But I apparently decided to make this post Batgirl-centric. Now with cheesy 60's theme music!

And now, if you've ever felt cowed by the sheer amount of history there is in comics, you have it summarized! In entertaining adorable comic form! In-comic comic written by the particularly awesome Stephanie Brown (the current Batgirl. The second trade of her series came out today! Convenient!). Who is unsinkable. And generally amazing.

Missing from this, of note, is Cassandra Cain, the previous Batgirl. One of the deadliest fighters in the DCU! Who is awesome. Also this.. Also awesome.

And, now that I've shown off those two, there is no avoiding mentioning the original. Barbara used to be Batgirl but now is Oracle, infojock supreme. Who kicks literal ass as well as figurative.

Receiving honourable mention is Huntress! She had a brief stint as Batgirl, so it fits. She's a teacher by day and a bad ass vigilante by night. Misfit would get honourable mention too, but I am enabling someone privately for her. ;)

There are lots of easy to get trades out for all of these lovely, ass kicking ladies! And a few of them have been in the animated shows too, trufax (well Babs and Huntress have been). I can also provide issues scans if you want some quick reading to see if you'd like to see more. c:

Now that you've seen way more Batgirl in a day than you wanted to...

Of course, being comics it'd have to be a crash course to learn new characters by the end of app period, sob.

Classic Doctor Who

Yes, Trans 9 has an awesome New Who cast, and may have even more awesomeness on the horizon coming to you very soon. But way before then, back in the dawn of time, while the Earth's crust was still cooling, there was what has become known as Classic Who.

It was a time when men were men, women somehow managed to be both independent and screamers at the same time (don't ask me how that works, honestly) and Cybermen were at least part Whiffle Ball.


Well, at least for awhile, anyway. But, ladies and gentlemen, today I come to you asking if you would please consider helping expand the Classic Side of the Who cast?

Seriously though, Dearka is an awesome pilot who likes GIANT GUNS. He's also hot and sassy and sarcastic but smart and serious and stands a firm ground in what he believes in. For realsies you guys playing Yzak is always fun but having his bff partner and biotch in the game makes for AMAZING THINGS. In both the hilarious and badass categories.
